#47 Vazhathandu ( Plantain Stem) Paruppu Usili

Vazhathandu or Plantain stem is one of the best nutritional veggie that we miss to understand.  This is one of the best known home remedy for kidney stones removals.

This stem juice also helps to prevent diabetics,beat constipation and any other digestive problem. Another known factor of its ability to help weight loss. When it comes to consuming this veggie, Paruppu Usili variety is a tasteful side dish and I am sure you would love this.



Banana Stem ( Vazhathandu) - 1 ( Medium sized)

Fennel Seeds(Sombu)            - 1 tsp

Kadalai paruppu (Channa Daal) - 60 gms

Red Chili                                    -4

Garlic                                         -1 clove

Hing                                          -1 pinch

Salt                                            as per your usual taste.

Coconut                                    - 4 tbsp ( grated)

Onion                                       - 1 (Big )

Buttermilk                                - 1 .5 cups ( diluted)

For Seasoning:

Mustard Seeds                         - 1 tsp

Ulundu ( Urad Daal)                 -1 tsp

Oil  ( Coconut or Sunflower)   - 2 tbsp

Red Chili                                 -2

Curry leaves                           - 10 to 15 leaves


Step 1 :  Clean and soak Kadalai Paruppu ( Channa Daal)  and 4 Red Chilies together for 0.5 hours.

Step 2: Drain the water completely and grind coarsely with red chilies, 1 piece of garlic , 1 tsp Fennel seeds(Sombu).

Keep the above content separately aside.

Step 3: Cut the Plantain into round circles first. Then cut into small squares further.

Make sure to clean the sticky twines ( fibrous) coming from the plantain while cutting.

Step 4: Now soak the cut pieces as cut in a bowl of diluted buttermilk.This would prevent the plantain stem ( Vazhathandu) turning into black.

Step 5: After finishing the cutting & soaking of Vazhathandu in buttermilk , put them in a pressure cooker.

Step 6 : Add 1 cup of water and a pinch of turmeric powder.

Step 7: Pressure cook for 1 whistle. Then allow the cooker to cool off , then drain the water.

Step 8 :  Heat the oil in a pan and add the mustard seeds, allow it to crackle , then add Ulundu , red chili and curry leaves.

Step 9: Now add the chopped onion and saute the content till the onion turns light pink.

Step 10:  Add the coarsely ground Kadalai Paruppu and cook the contents in the pan for 10 minutes in a low flame. Add 4 tbsp of freshly grated coconut.

Step 11 : Add Salt as required.

Step 12 : After you decide to confirm the raw smell of the Kadalai Paruppu taken off from the pan,( you can see the contents would become crispy), add the cooked Vazhathandu and cook on a low flame for 7 to 8 minutes.

Step 13 : Stir the contents well so that the Vazhathandu+Kadalai Paruppu+onion+coconut are mixed up well.

Step 14 : Now switch off the stove.

Tasty & Healthy Vazhathandu Paruppu Usili is ready to serve. Serve it with Rice + Sambar or Rice + Rasam.
