Ven Pongal/ Ghee Pongal Recipe

Ven Pongal is a very easy and comfort food.My husband like Ven Pongal. I make mostly in weekend mornings. I make it with Chutney if i want to make Simple. But most time, I go with  husband's like  with Sambar and Medhu vada


  1. Raw rice -1cup
  2. Moong dal/ pasi paruppu -1/4 cup
  3. water 4 1/2 cups
  4. salt -as needed
  5. Asafoetida 1 pinch

To Temper

  1. Ghee - 2tblsp
  2. Ginger chopped - 1 tblsp
  3. pepper - 2tsp
  4. jeera - 2 tsp
  5. green chill -2no
  6. cashews -10 to 12
  7. curry leaves - 1 sprig


1. Dry  roast the paasi paruppu/moong daal first for extra flavour. Then wash rice and /paruppu/daal together.

2. Heat a cooker with a tsp of ghee add the washed rice and daal. Then add 4& 1/2 cups of water, salt and asafoetida and mix it well.

Pressure cook for 5 whistles. Wait until pressure gets released by itself, open and mash it.

3. Season the items given under to temper.

First add ghee, when hot add ginger,pepper,green chilli,jeera and cashews. Add curry leaves lastly.

Mix well the fried items  and then add it to pongal and mix well.U can get yummy Ven Pongal.
