Thuvaram paruppu Rice is another South Indian home made fast food variety . Very delicious healthy and you will not find this dish in any hotel/restaurants.
This dish can be done with very minimal ingredients and another tasty dish for kids.
Raw Rice - 1 cup ( 250 ml)
Toor Dal - 1/2 cup ( 12 5 ml)
Shallot Onions ( chinna vengayam) - 10 to 15
Dry Red Chili - 1
Vadagam - 4
Curry leaves - 15
Tamarind - a small gooseberry sized round.
Turmeric powder -1/2 tsp
Sambar powder -1 .5 tbsp
Salt as needed
Oil - 2 tbsp ( Veg Oil)
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Split Urad Dal ( white udaicha ulundu) - 1 tsp
Water -3 cups
Ghee - 1 tbsp
Hinge - 1/4 tsp
Take 1 cup of raw rice , 1/2 cup of (thuvaram Paruppu) Toor Dal in a bowl. Wash it 3 to 4 times in running water .
Soak for 1/2 hour.
Cut the onions and keep it aside.
In a small bowl and add 1 gooseberry sized tamarind ball and add 1/2 cup of hot water. Soak it to get pulp extract of tamarind.
Take a pressure cooker and heat it .
Add 2 tbsp of oil ,1 tbsp ghee and heat it.
Add 1 tsp mustard seeds. Once the mustard starts splitting, add urad dal, 1 Red Chili ,Onion Vadagam,Small Onions, curry leaves and
fry it for a minute.
Add 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, Salt .
Mix & fry the contents well.
Now add the Tamarind extract and 3 cups of water . Mix the contents well.
Add 1.5 tbsp Sambar powder and 1/4 tsp of Hinge.
Now add the soaked 1 cup of Raw Rice and 1/2 cup of Thuvaram paruppu to the cooker and mix the contents well.
Close the pressure cooker lid and cook for 3 whistles.
Yummy Thuvaram paruppu rice ready to serve. Kids would like the aroma of the Toor Dal with Sambar powder. The trump card of this dish is the fried cooked Onion Vadagam. This makes the rice so special.

While serving, you can also add 1 tbsp of ghee which makes this a feast dish.
